No matter where you are soaking up rays, in the salon or at home there is a lot you need to be aware of, Tan Smart, Tan Super Smart.  Different types of UV light affect your body and how to maximize your tan with the right lotion.

Know your skin type!

Knowing how sensitive your skin is to UV light is one of the first steps in indoor tanning. By understanding your skin type, you’ll be better able to maximize the benefits and minimize the risks of too much or too little UV exposure. In most cases, the lighter your skin is, the less sunlight or UV light you should expose it to, both indoors and outdoors.

UV Light

Ultraviolet light, or UV light, is the key to getting your skin golden brown. Educating clients on how to use UV light effectively is one of our top priorities.

We will help you to understand how the three different wavelengths of UV light affect your skin, the benefits UVB can have and the potential for skin damage to occur when UV light is used excessively. If you still have questions, stop by Hot Spot Tanning and speak with one our of staff.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D, aka the sunshine vitamin, is a fat-soluble vitamin that is vital for regulating calcium, magnesium and phosphorus absorption in our bodies. It is a vitamin with an important role in human health that has been associated in some studies with a reduced risk of conditions such as breast, prostate and ovarian cancers, multiple sclerosis and diabetes.

Sunlight is the principal source of vitamin D for humans worldwide. Its production is stimulated in the body when skin is exposed to UVB radiation, regardless of the source. Over the course of millions of years, exposure to UVB radiation has been an effective and practical vitamin D fortification strategy. Health Canada also confirms that tanning beds that emit UVB produce vitamin D.

In fact, Dr. Michael Holick of Boston University has shown that vitamin D produced by UVB radiation from a tanning bed maintains longer lasting and more consistent levels of vitamin D than taking vitamin D supplements.

Tanning Outdoors

Don't get burned by the unpredictable

When the sun is shining, getting a tan directly from the source seems like a great way to get the most out of the sunshine. However, there are numerous uncontrollable factors to consider when tanning outdoors that can increase your risk of overexposure.

When tanning outdoors, these factors can put your skin at risk:

  • Time of year and day
  • Altitude
  • Cloud coverage
  • Pollutants
  • Reflective surfaces
  • Exposure to UVC rays due to ozone depletion

Ideally 10-20 minutes of unprotected exposure depending on your skin type will allow for vitamin D production to take place. Then, we strongly advise applying sunscreen when heading outdoors. While sunscreen does inhibit vitamin D production, overexposure to the sun can cause much more serious health problems. Precautions should always be taken to avoid the risk of sunburn!

The smart tanning alternative

Hot Spot Tanning gives you the ability to tan in a controlled environment where your skin is our top priority. You will be able to build your tan gradually, while developing the pigmentation that increases your natural SPF and getting the vitamin D your body needs to stay healthy.

Tanning Lotions

Your tanning alie

When your skin is not properly moisturized by a product like a tanning lotion, it reflects UV light and does not tan effectively. To get the most out of your tan as quickly as possible, a tanning lotion is nothing short of essential.

Helping you achieve your ideal shade is part of Hot Spot Tanning's Core, and that is why every we offer a variety of lotions made with the highest quality ingredients.
